Busy few weeks. I bought a new guitar and performed at my first open mic!
It’s been an awesome few weeks! As a belated birthday present to myself, I bought myself my first guitar. I’ve been learning chords the past couple of weeks, and I’m really excited to learn more. My goal is to accompany myself on my own songs!
Even more exciting: I just sang at my first open mic ever last week! My guitarist and I performed my original protest song, “If I Had a Penny,” around midnight at Sidewalk Cafe. I was exhausted by the time I got on stage after working the whole the day, but it was a great experience. Sidewalk Cafe is run by some super cool people who keep the atmosphere really positive and inviting, especially for a newbie.
I plan for this to be the first of many open mics to come! Photos above: (left) at Sidewalk Cafe with my hand gracefully covering my face 😀 and (right) me with the new guitar!
Melissa Walters releases a sample of her new song “If I Had a Penny” the weekend of the People’s Climate March, just before May Day.
This past weekend was a big one. The People’s Climate March was on Saturday, and, following shortly after, the Rise Up rally for immigrants’ and workers’ rights took place in NYC on May Day.
In the spirit of protest, I released a sample of a new song I’m working on. When I first wrote this song, it was an attempt at getting myself out of writer’s block with completely different lyrics, except for “If I had a penny for every time…” I wasn’t happy with it, but I liked some of the rhythm and melody. So, I set it aside and thought I might come back to it at another time. After the presidential election, I changed the words, and it suddenly came together…in a much more powerful way than before!
Photos in the sample video are from various marches I went to, including the Women’s March. Enjoy – and check back soon. I’m hoping to release the full version in a few weeks!

Melissa Walters’s submission for Brandi Carlile’s Cover Stories Competition.
A few weeks ago, I submitted a video of “Again Today” for Brandi Carlile’s Cover Stories competition…
Although I didn’t make it to the final round, I was excited and humbled to be part of a campaign to raise funds and awareness for children affected by war. Please check out the info below to learn more about this powerful new album to benefit War Child UK.
